Health Insurance Survey of Farm and Ranch Operators

The Center for Rural Health, in collaboration with the Access Project, conducted a health care survey of farm and ranch families in Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. State Offices of Rural Health in each of the survey states were also partners in the project. The purpose of the survey was to gather information about farmers’ health insurance coverage issues. This information will be shared with state and federal policy makers to help inform them on how to best improve access to affordable health insurance for farmers, ranchers, and other small business owners.

The 2007 survey gathered information about health care and health insurance issues for farm families focusing on the cost of health insurance premiums, deductibles and co-payments and other out-of-pocket expenses and any outstanding medical bills. The telephone survey of over 2,000 farm and ranch operators was conducted by the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service led by North Dakota Field Office.
