Campus Suicide Prevention

The University of North Dakota (UND) American Indian Campus Suicide Prevention Grant is funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. This programs partners the University of North Dakota with reservations and tribal colleges while teaming the Center for Rural Health, American Indian Student Services, Department of Psychology, and the University Crisis Team to provide a comprehensive program to identify student needs and intervene to prevent suicide and support students and their families. The grant provides a stronger link between the UND American Indian community and the reservations in North Dakota working in conjunction with the suicide prevention coordinators at each reservation to strengthen the communication between the sites to increase awareness and better serve the needs of students before they reach a crisis. This program provides workshops for students and staff at UND on topics such as signs of suicide, how to help one another, and what resources are available for students in crisis. It also helps to extend the model to tribal colleges in North Dakota during the second and third year of the grant.
