Celebrating the Power of Rural in North Dakota Video Challenge 2017

Center for Rural Health and the North Dakota Rural Health Association are proud to announce the “Power of Rural” Video Challenge 2017. Create a video with your vision of what rural health means in North Dakota, and share it with us.

How Does Rural Affect You?

Rural communities are the backbone of our country and especially our state. More than 52% of North Dakotans live in rural areas. Rural America is important to all Americans. It is a primary source for inexpensive and safe food, affordable energy, clean drinking water, and accessible outdoor recreation. But rural communities also face real and unique challenges. Programs designed to work in urban areas often do not work well in rural areas. While urban communities deal with similar issues as rural America, including increase in crime, drug use, childhood poverty, and widespread obesity, rural communities have the added difficulty of attracting healthcare professionals. And although the Affordable Care Act offers more Americans health insurance, the travel distance required to see a provider limits access.

Create and Submit Your Video!

This video challenge invites middle, junior, and high school student teams in North Dakota to produce videos depicting and celebrating healthcare in rural North Dakota. The challenge is part of our celebration of National Rural Health Day on November 16. We hope you will consider incorporating this fun and unique project into your lesson plans for the upcoming school year. It is designed as a team project. Students are asked to assemble a team, research healthcare in rural North Dakota, and put together 15- to 30-second videos. Students should use their creativity and show us what makes the “Power of Rural” special.

To submit a video, send the video link to kylie.nissen@med.und.edu through the Dropbox at https://dropbox.med.und.edu/file. Include the video, name of the group submitting the video, names of the individuals involved in creating the video, and the contact’s name/email address/phone number. By submitting a photo for this contest, you agree to the Terms of Use.

Win a Prize!

The winning team will receive a $250 prize. The entries will be featured on the Center for Rural Health website and social media and will be used to spread the word about the power of rural. A panel of judges from the Center for Rural Health and the North Dakota Rural Health Association will review all entries to determine the winning video. Entries will be judged on creativity, originality, photo quality, how well it communicates the concept of “Power of Rural,” and overall appeal.

Contest Deadline and Eligibility

All entries must be received by 5:00 pm Central on November 10. Students in grades 5 – 12 are eligible to submit videos. The video challenge is just one of the many events planned for National Rural Health Day in North Dakota. We hope you will find this to be a fun and educational assignment for your students/members.

Use of Copyrighted Materials

Videos submitted must be royalty-free. By submitting a video, you understand you have the right and permission of the owner of the video to use it for this contest. Videos not meeting this requirement will not be eligible for prizes and will be disqualified from the National Rural Health Day Power of Rural in North Dakota Video Challenge.
