Karen Speaker, BA
Karen Speaker is a program assistant at the Center for Rural Health at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences. In her position, Speaker provides computer support as needed for the Center by training new employees in the use of the Network drive and Outlook e-mail program. Speaker also serves as the Record Information Coordinator for the Center for Rural Health and the Family to Family network. Speaker assists with the analysis of various research projects including the development and distribution of surveys. Speaker works with the Nursing Workforce Needs Study, the Physician and Dental Tracking Project, North Dakota Council on Abused Women (NDCAWS) and on the Empowerment Evaluation project.
Speaker has been employed at the University of North Dakota for 29 years. Speakers past experience involved working at the Human Nutrition Research Laboratory for 27 years. Speaker initially worked as a Dietary Technician, then transferred to the Bio-physics Laboratory. During her work as Bio-physics technician Speaker was responsible for the operation and maintenance of the most sophisticated whole-body counting equipment in the United States. She also co-authored a paper on Radon that was presented at the International Symposium on Radon and Radon Reduction Technology, and a presentation on the effect of environmental radiation on Copper-67. Speaker then transferred to the Psychology Research Laboratory and worked with the development and testing related to Psychology research studies evaluating the effects of trace minerals and vitamins in humans and animals. Speaker developed, documented and analyzed multiple research procedures as well as conducted various psychological research testing and co-authored a presentation given at the North Dakota Academy of Science in 1996.
Speaker received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Home Economics from the University of North Dakota in 1974 and has continued with her education during her employment at the University. Speaker is currently attending Graduate coursework and looking to obtain her Masters Degree.
Established in 1980, the Center for Rural Health is one of the nation's most experienced rural health organizations. It has developed a full complement of programs to assist researchers, educators, policymakers, health care providers and, most importantly, rural residents to address changing rural environments by identifying and researching rural health issues, analyzing health policy, strengthening local capabilities, developing community-based alternatives, and advocating for rural concerns.

This study, funded in 2005 by the North Dakota Board of Nursing, examined the procedures, staffing patterns, delegation process, administrative perceptions of the safety of medication assistants in a survey of health care facilities in North Dakota.
