Maren Niemeier, MLIS
Maren A. Niemeier is the deputy director for the Health Workforce Information Center project of the Center for Rural Health at the University of North Dakota (UND) School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Grand Forks. As the program’s deputy director, Niemeier coordinates content development for the web site. She also leads usability efforts and manages the web site’s information architecture.
Niemeier served as lead information specialist for the Rural Assistance Center at the Center for Rural Health from 2003 to early 2008. She developed information content for the RAC web site, developed technology solutions for disseminating information, and assisted RAC customers in finding information. Prior to joining the Center for Rural Health, Niemeier was the digital services librarian for the UND Chester Fritz Library where she developed a custom content-management system for the library's web site and addressed web site usability issues as well as providing reference services to UND students, faculty and staff. As network coordinator for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine-Midcontinental Region from 1998-1999, Niemeier provided support and training for National Library of Medicine products and services to a six-state region.
Niemeier completed a post-masters fellowship at the National Library of Medicine (NLM) as part of the NLM Associate Fellows program from 1996-1997. She received her Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1996 and her Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics in 1992 from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. Niemeier grew up in Fargo, N.D. and has family ties to the Mayville area.
Established in 1980, the Center for Rural Health is one of the nation's most experienced rural health organizations. It has developed a full complement of programs to assist researchers, educators, policymakers, health care providers and, most importantly, rural residents to address changing rural environments by identifying and researching rural health issues, analyzing health policy, strengthening local capabilities, developing community-based alternatives, and advocating for rural concerns.
