Resources Available for Rural Emergency Hospitals
Dec 4, 2025
A Rural Emergency Hospital (REH) is a new provider type created to preserve rural access to essential services and strengthen access to outpatient medical services. The REH designation became effective on January 1, 2023.
"There are resources available at no cost to facilities interested in exploring REH through the Rural Health Redesign Center," said Nicole Threadgold, grant program director at the Center for Rural Health. "This level of support and expertise is important as REH is explored."
REH Resources
The Rural Health Redesign Center houses resources for facilities considering converting to an REH, as well as resources tailored towards current REHs, at no cost. The Rural Health Redesign Center offers a range of services including
- Education
- Financial modeling
- Application tools
- Board of director and community education and marketing tools
- Strategic planning
Pre-Conversion to an REH
For hospitals considering converting to a REH, the Rural Health Redesign Center offers support tailored to the needs of individual communities to help you determine if the REH designation is right for your organization and community.
Rural Emergency Hospital Network
All current REHs are welcome to join the Rural Emergency Hospital Network to foster collaborations and exchange knowledge with other REHs around the U.S. Engaging in this network provides access to peer-to-peer conversations, educational resources, and one-one-one and consulting.
