National Primary Care Week is an annual event held to highlight the importance of primary care and bring healthcare professionals together to discuss and learn about generalist and interdisciplinary healthcare, particularly its impact on and importance to underserved populations.

Most events during the week will be held at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences (SMHS).

Monday, October 28

Primary Care: Thinking Globally, Acting Locally
12:00 — 1:00 pm @ SMHS Room W202
Intended audience: Students from medicine, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner programs • Lunch provided

Join Dr. David Schmitz, chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine, and Dr. Dinesh Bande, Chair of Department of Internal Medicine, as they discusses what’s happening in primary care around the globe, and what part North Dakota is playing on the national and international level.

Come and hear from a variety of primary care physicians from around the state as they share stories and experiences from their time in practice.

Community Meet and Greet

Intended audience: All health profession students • Lunch provided to students

Come and “meet and greet” our healthcare facilities from all over North Dakota! Learn about various healthcare job opportunities in both rural and urban settings, and make connections with future potential employers! Lunch provided by the Center for Rural Health.

Wednesday, October 30

Transforming Rural Healthcare through Telemedicine

Intended audience: All health profession students • Lunch provided

Dr. Brian Skow is a University of North Dakota SMHS alum who is now serving as the chief medical officer and medical director of Avera eCARE Emergency. Learn how eCARE is saving rural patient's time, money, and lives.

Summer Opportunities Luncheon
12:00 — 1:00 pm @ SMHS Auditorium Room E101
Intended audience: 1st year medical students • Lunch provided

Hear first-hand experiences from 2nd year students about the summer programs and opportunities available to 1st year medical students, including rural experiences, research, medical trips abroad, and more. Lunch provided by North Dakota Rural Health Association.

Friday, November 1

Breakfast with North Dakota Area Health Education Center (AHEC)
7:15 — 8:30 am @ SMHS 2nd Floor
Intended audience: Students from medicine, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner programs

Enjoy coffee and refreshments and learn about AHEC scholars and AHEC clinical rotation stipends.

Saturday, November 2

Health Screenings Fair
10:00 am — 2:00 pm @ Hugo's Family Marketplace on 32nd Avenue in Grand Forks

A chance for health career students to provide free screening services such as blood pressure checks and nutritional information for members of the community. Event organized and funded by American Medical Student Association.
