Primary Care Week: October 29 - November 3

National Primary Care Week is an annual event held to highlight the importance of primary care and bring healthcare professionals together to discuss and learn about generalist and interdisciplinary healthcare, particularly its impact on and importance to underserved populations.

Most events during the week will be held at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences (SMHS).

Monday, October 29

Rural Health: Thinking Globally, Acting Locally

Intended audience: Students from medicine, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner programs • Lunch provided

Join Dr. David Schmitz, chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine, as he discusses what’s happening in rural health around the globe, and what part North Dakota is playing on the national and international level.

Community Meet & Greet - Healthcare Career Fair
11:00 am — 1:00 pm @ SMHS 2nd floor, Rooms E222, E223, & E224
Intended audience: All health profession students on campus • Lunch provided

Come and “meet and greet” our healthcare employers from around the state! Learn about various healthcare job opportunities in both rural and urban settings, and make connections with future potential employers! Lunch provided to health profession students by the Center for Rural Health.

Summer Opportunities Session

Hear first-hand experiences from 2nd year students about the summer programs and opportunities available to 1st year medical students, including rural experiences, research, medical trips abroad, and more.

Transforming Rural Healthcare through Telemedicine

Dr. Brian Skow is a UND SMHS alum who is now serving as the chief medical officer and medical director of Avera eCARE Emergency. Learn how eCARE is saving rural patient’s time, money, and lives.

Primary Care Team Panel Q & A

Intended audience: Any interested health profession student • Meal provided

Panelists include Dr. Matthew Viscito, Family Physician at Unity Medical Center in Grafton; Dr. Paul German, Emergency Medicine Physician at Altru Health System; and Dr. Collette Lessard, Obstetrics & Gynecology at Altru Health System.

Loan Repayment/RuralMed Presentation

Intended audience: Students from medicine, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner programs

Bring your own lunch and hear about scholarship and loan repayment options available to those entering a primary care field!

Saturday, November 3

Health Screenings Fair
10:00 am — 4:00 pm @ Hugo's Family Marketplace on 32nd Avenue in Grand Forks

A chance for health career students to provide free screening services such as blood pressure checks and nutritional information for members of the community. Event organized and funded by AMSA.
