Respirator Fit Testing Training

Due to the concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, regrettably this training in May/June and the 2020 Dakota Conference on Rural and Public Health have been canceled.

This training will provide you with information you need to perform respirator fit testing in your community.

Respiratory exposures in agriculture include pesticides, grain dust, livestock, mold, hay, exhaust from machinery, and welding fumes. Selection and appropriate use of respiratory protection is key to prevention of acute respiratory illness and long-term disease. Fit testing may be required prior to using a respirator for certain jobs, such as pesticide application. Respirator Fit Testing determines whether a particular respirator properly fits the face of the wearer. Proper fit is required for optimal protection. This training will provide information on qualitative fit testing.

Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Determine your role in respirator fit testing based on professional capacity
  • Recognize when a respirator fit test is needed and required
  • Explain the new Worker Protection Standard (WPS) related to agriculture and respirator fit testing
  • Conduct qualitative respirator fit tests
  • Describe all aspects of medical evaluation and your role in achieving this aspect of fit testing
  • Utilize respirator fit test documentation requirements
  • Determine who to collaborate with to establish a respirator fit testing program in your area
  • Discuss a business plan for integrating fit testing into your organization

Training Materials

As part of the training, each participant will receive the following:

  • Guidebook (test instruction, OSHA regulations, WPS information, sample documents, resources)
  • Opportunity to purchase a Respirator Fit Test Kit at a 50% discount
  • Respirators (filtering face piece respirators, reusable cartridge respirator, P100 cartridges)
